We are a group of dedicated breeders who aim to supply high quality wool shedding
genetics from performance recorded sheep.
Farm trials show that using high index wool shedding sires can provide increased
returns by reducing needs for shearing, dagging and tail docking as well as increasing
meat production by diverting energy normally used to grow wool into weight gain.
Average costs for shearing/dagging/flystrike are £……. per ewe.
Performance recording of Wiltshires began in 1996 and the aim of recording is to
work out how much of each animal's performance is due to its genes and how much
is because of the environment so that animals that are genetically superior for
traits such as growth and prolificacy can be identified.
We want to produce the best recorded wool shedding stock for the market, wether
that is for the pedigree breeder who wants to improve the performance of their flock
with a recorded sire or a commercial breeder who wants to breed the wool off his
sheep with a high performance maternal sire.
To enable us to do this we all record our stock, collecting data at birth, 8 & 21
weeks of age. We use reference sires to ensure a good genetic linkage between members’
flocks which enables us to compare animals across the group.
